In this challenge, Vibot goes on a scavenger hunt to find Easter eggs! Several eggs can be hidden in a room of your own choosing (for example, your schoolyard, your bedroom, your classroom, etc.) It is up to you to decide what will occur during the scene, and to help Vibot find the chocolates (which he cannot wait to devour). Situation analysis How can we add one of our own pictures as a backdrop on Scratch? Are there different ways to hide objects in the room, and which coding blocks allow us to make them appear? Which Scratch function allows us to create our own sprites instead of choosing from Scratch’s sprite library? Which coding blocks can create a predefined series of event (for example, if Vibot touches A, A sends a message to B and C, which in turn create different effects). Step 2. Modelling On a sheet of paper or a Google Document, identify the different elements (backdrop, sprites, blocks, dialogues, movements, etc.) that you will need to complete the challenge. It might be useful to draw a sketch of the scene that you wish to create. You could therefore plan ahead and decide the locations where you will hide the eggs. Why is it important to prepare the different elements before programming the actual game? Step 3. Choose the backdrop Choose a location from your everyday life. This place could be your classroom, a room in your house, your street, etc. Make sure that the background is large enough to allow Vibot to roam about while he is looking for the eggs. When you have chosen a good location, take a picture and upload it to Scratch. Step 4. Create and insert sprites Create your own Easter eggs and decorate them as you wish. Find ways to hide the eggs in your chosen location. This can be accomplished using different coding blocks or algorithms. The more strategies you use to hide the eggs, the better. Be creative! You can add several other sprites in your challenge. You could add people or objects that will help Vibot find the eggs, and others that will attempt to ruin his scavenger hunt. You could take a picture of people or objects from your daily life and upload them to Scratch. Step 5. Create a complete challenge You will have to determine how Vibot’s Easter hunt will take place: will it be a game in which a player will control Vibot to find the eggs? Or will it rather be a story in which you will program the series of events that will take place? Don’t hesitate to draw on the other challenges in this guide to decide which way you want to go. Think about adding dialogues to your challenge. Variations If you wish to create a game, you could consider adding a scoring system to make it more interesting. If you feel up to it, it would be fun for you to add several scenes to the challenge. You could then add several backdrops from your daily life and hide the eggs in these different locations. It is possible to add music to your Scratch projects. You could consider adding a victory sound every time Vibot finds an egg. You could also add a song that you love as background music so your challenge offers an even more accurate reflection of your daily life.
