The Kayan sisters are Native Americans. Their story is long and strong. Their parents died from sickness brought over by Englishmen. The girls have spent their whole lives together, being strong and happy. Jorja is the youngest, Gloria the second youngest, then Helen, then Orchid, and Maya is the oldest. The girls manage to live without their parents and work and get jobs done and eat. They have a new place to live every week. They build their own shelters and keep them until they're knocked down by animals or storms.
