(WARNING - I may have posted this warning here for three reasons - 1) this project contains my opinions, 2) this project goes over the usual episode length, or 3) both! In this case, it's one. This project is twenty-seven minutes long, so please, for the sake of your sanity, do something else while listening to me ramble. Thanks! - Whovian-Pegasister) - Who's Who With Whovian - Episode Nine - The History of Preschool TV and Why I Enjoy it So Dang Much, Part 1 (Or, The History of Preschool TV ... According to Whovian, Part 1) - Episode Length: We've got ourselves a full-blown nearly-half-hour special right here! 27 minutes long. Please, feel free to do something else while listening. Heyo Scratch, and welcome to the sometimes-weekly-and-sometimes-not podcast thing, Who's Who With Whovian! This is where I talk about anything and everything and occasionally break out the ukulele. This week's episode: Whovian delves into the massive topic that is preschool TV and gives her listeners a preschool TV crash course. Part One focuses on PBS Kids and Noggin. Also, Whovian briefly discusses why she wants to write for preschool TV. Please feel free to comment about your favorite childhood show/channel/programming block below! (Just remember to keep it Scratch-appropriate kids shows.)
Featuring Penguino yet again! ( @cleverpenguin ) She likes to join in on my episodes and chime in with her opinion, and I often rely on her for knowledge of things we enjoy, such as TV and state capitols and music. (Alright, I don't enjoy state capitols, but she had them all memorized waaaay before you're supposed to memorize them.) Please give her a follow! She is one of the best people I know. (She's not very active, but I think she might do her own podcast-thing one day!) Audio was edited some due to bloopers from the both of us. Channels/programming blocks mentioned: -Noggin (now Nick Jr.) -Nick Jr. (the programming block - I'll explain this in the next episode) -Playhouse Disney (programming block/channel in some countries - now Disney Junior) -PBS Kids (programming block/channel, depending on where you live in the States) -PBS Kids Sprout (now Sprout - I explained this already) -NBC Kids (programming block? I don't know if they kept it around or if they still use Qubo programming). Credit to all of those channels/programming blocks listed above, and credit to the following shows that got a mention: PBS Kids: Between the Lions, Sesame Street, Martha Speaks, The Electric Company, Super Why, WordGirl, Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, Teletubbies, Dragon Tales, Clifford the Big Red Dog, Dinosaur Train, Sid the Science Kid (I don't know if I name-dropped this one, but it was a Jim Henson show back in the day), and Odd Squad, which I claim no ownership of and are owned by their respective companies; Noggin/Nick Jr.: Teletubbies (technically they own it now; long story), Oswald, Dora the Explorer, Blue's Clues, Bing and Bong, LazyTown, The Backyardigans, Bill Nye the Science Guy (I don't know who owns the rights to it now; I think Disney has them again), Square One TV, and The Electirc Company (1970's version), which I claim no ownership of and are owned by their respective companies. Moose and Zee belong to Viacom now - because Noggin is back! They actually have a nice new app which is being proclaimed as the first SVOD (streaming video on demand) service for preschoolers. It has some of the shows I mentioned here and so many more that I loved as a kid, if you want to check it out! I will warn you that this costs money and I am in no way telling you to go buy something. I'm just telling you it's there. (A lot of the old shows aren't even on YouTube, so this was a great alternative. Unfortunately for us, we couldn't buy it for other reasons ... *sighs*) The background was made by me with my Wacom tablet in Scratch, and all audio is by me! If you've read this far, you're amazing. Finally, the next episode of this three-parter will continue and conclude the Noggin story, bringing us into Nick Jr.'s rise. If we have time, I'll go on about Playhouse Disney, aka the home of the Wiggles in America until they abandoned Disney for Sprout, and maybe Qubo, though I doubt I'll have enough time to talk about Qubo. The last episode should be about the channels I didn't get as a kid and the fate of preschool television today. I hope you all will join me next time in this thrilling (perhaps?) saga! Oh, and the obligatory Star Wars reference - credit to Disney/LucasFilm. ... How many things did I credit this time? Yeesh, the list continues to grow ... ... If you've read this far, comment "Aw! I HATE 'to be continued's!" Ten points to Griffondor if you get the reference.
