Under an atmosphere of water, a strange bubble of air covers a world of stone and earth. The world itself is tiny, maybe the size of the Moon, but the ocean of liquid surrounding it is massive. All usable land has been taken over by a sentient species, of which there are two notable varieties: the Winged and the Mundanes. Mundanes: pretty much muggles x10. Much, much more common, and generally keep out of the Winged’s business. They're rarely involved in ruling Subnautical and when they come into Winged circles they're usually distrusted and looked down upon. Winged: It is believed that long ago a select group of Mundanes grew wings and became Winged. In these ancient times, Subnautical was primitive and plain, but these new Wingeds believed that they could rise above their current state and roam the stars that they could barely see through the atmosphere. So they began to build and study, writing down their findings in scrolls. Eventually, they reached the edge of the watery atmosphere, in orbit around their planet. Then they realized that they were not alone. Hundreds and hundreds of creatures from different planets waged intergalactic wars around their world, most with much more advanced technology that could destroy Subnautical in an instant. For their own safety, the explorers retreated until they could match the power of the worlds outside, but over time, their progress slowed. Soon all the Winged cared to do was to keep themselves hidden from the rest of the universe. They rule Subnautical, trying to preserve the peace and keep high flyers only a few hundred feet above the ground.
