“Yes, yes. I know, don’t worry I’ll be back before an hour”, said Moonstone before hastily giving his two kits, Midnight and Blaze, a kiss and turned to Summer. “I know”, she fretted anxiously, “but I’ve got 2 kits to feed and you know how Blaze is”. At this she turned to her 10 year old kitten who was jumping and rolling around the cave, occasionally stopping to annoy her older brother. “You know I’ll be back”. Summer sighed as she turned back toward her mate, “I know”. She said touching his nose with her own *** Blaze was still rolling around, blissfully unaware of the thoughts swirling like an endless storm around her family's minds. ”Where is he? He should have been here half an hour ago”. ”Don’t worry mum, he’s never failed us, he’ll come through”, Midnight assured his pacing mother, “I’m sure he’s-“ “Maybe he’s partying with the other cats”, Blaze interrupted. They looked at her. “No? Not that kind of problem?” Summer shook her head at her innocent kit before turning back to her elder son. “Right, I’m going to go look for him so stay here, don’t wander off or get in trouble. Understand? Or maybe I should call up Heather?” “NO!” the two kits yelled. She sighed once more and then rushed off towards the looming trees. Midnight continued his mother’s pacing, agitated, a feeling not helped by his sister. Finally, he snapped. “What is it!!!? You’ve been staring at me for the last 10 minutes! Give it a rest! We’re not following mum, okay? I need to look after you.” Blaze didn’t give any indication that she had heard him and instead resumed staring at him with her cute, round, adorable eyes filled with the softest shade of sky blue he’d ever seen. Midnight shook his head vigorously. No way he was going to fall for that again and was about to say so when Blaze enlarged her eyes and started whimpering. “Oh, alright, fine”, Midnight sighed, “but you’ve got to listen to me”, he warned. Blaze nodded enthusiastically and bounded outside closely followed by a wary Midnight. Midnight didn’t know how long it had been but it felt like he had been trudging after Blaze’s firey glow forever, watching it light up her yellow fur like sunlight, then gently fading into the colour of an autumn leaf. “Let’s go back sis”, he begged but Blaze shook her head adamantly. Just then he heard a familiar hiss. “She’s close!”, he yelled and went crashing through the trees with his mind fraught with worries. And entered a drastic scene. He wished it was a play, that it wasn’t real. But it was. In every cruel, horrible, ghastly way. His heart pounded, 19 to the dozen, as he saw his mother, barely standing, blood racing down to the grass, pouring from various wounds. He saw, in silent shock, his mother drop to the floor, defeated, next to her fallen partner. Before the death blow came their eyes met. Her desperate look told the words she couldn’t say. Run. Midnight instantly turned and darted through the crowded bushes, he stopped for a split second in front of his sister, who standing in shock and confusion, and without a word he grabbed her in his mouth by the scruff of her neck and continued sprinting through the trees. As he ran through the gloomy, dark forest he could feel Blaze trying to wriggle her way out, but determined not to stop he held on tighter, his blazing eyes began to adjust to the dark and there in the distance he spotted the den. “We’re almost there!” he thought to himself, slowly increasing his pace. In a flash he reached the entrance of the den and skidded to a stop gently dropping the wriggling kit onto the floor. Blaze's eyes filled with tears, "w-what about mum? And dad?". Still trying to catch his breath, Midnight lowered his eyes in sorrow, “T-the wolves, they were-they were in the hunting territory. Mum. Dad. Th-they're gone Blaze! It was too late- we were too late,” his voice began to break as he began to sob. Midnight lowered his head, tears pouring from his eyes as he suddenly remembered the drastic scene he had rushed into, “the-they’re gone!”.
