Completely pureblood dragons like the ones listed below are hard to come across on this continent, however, due to mixed species breeding. Other creatures inhabiting Illitrical include griffins, wyverns, nagas, etc. however there are no remarkably notable traits differentiating one type of wyvern or griffin from another. Dragons of Ice and Sea ↴ Sea Dragons → typically, sea-dwelling dragons are built long and thin with fat tails, webbed talons, and massive wings for propelling through water. They're also known for having reflective scales that mimic the light on the ocean's surface, though typically their colors mostly include deep shades of blue and gray with some bright markings and undertones. River dragons → river dragons are built thick with flat heads and webbed, sticky toes for gripping river rocks and maneuvering through fast-flowering water channels. Instead of wings, river dragons will often have retractable fins, used for floating and navigating through the water, but useless when it comes to flight. River dragons often have blue-grey colors with mottled markings to camouflage with the stones at the water's bed. Arctic Dragons → arctic dragons are typically built tall and agile, with sharp curved talons for gripping the ice. Some arctic dragons are known to have a blubber coating over their bellies, necks, and tails, while others may have thick fur. They are also adorned with sharp horns and spikes lining their spines. Common colors are mostly monochrome; white with traces of gray and silver, less frequently undertones of blue, orange, etc. Dragons of Earth and Sky ↴ Forest Dragons → forest-dwelling dragons are typically built small and lithe but with powerful talons for gripping trees and grappling with larger prey. Forest dragons have warm, mottled colors to camouflage with the forest. Mountain Dragons → mountain dragons are built massive and bulky, with wide wings for battling hurricane power winds. They're known for having long snouts and flat heads with a keen sense of sight and hearing, as well as massive talons for gripping mountain peaks. Mountain dragons often have pale or dark color palettes, however, there is no specific hue mountain dragons have become known for. Dragons of Sand and Fire ↴ Desert dragons → desert-dwelling dragons are built small with wiry bodies. They often have pale off-white bodies, sometimes more golden or brown with black markings. They have heavily plated backs with thin cactus-like spines and small, sunken-in eyes able to see even in harsh lights. They also have thick, curved talons used for digging and breaking cacti for food and water. Some dragons inhabiting desert regions also have hints of fur along their heads and tails. Desert dragons oppose to having a unique call, are able to mimic the sounds of other animals they've heard in order to fool and attract prey or scare away predators. Volcanic dragons → volcano-dwelling dragons are hard to come across as there aren't any known active volcanoes around Illitrical. These dragons are built heavy with thick scales and special talon "pads" to protect them from sharp rocks and heat. They also have special respiratory systems allowing them to filter out ash and smoke. Volcanic dragons have dark scales with bright orange, red, or yellow undertones, like lava running through rocks. MERPEOPLE Deep Sea Merpeople ↴ Merpeople residing in the deepest depths of the ocean are often more animalistic in appearance and nature; they often have sharp claws and fangs, as well as scaly arms and torsos with webbed ears. They also have longer tails bearing massive fins to provide flexibility to maneuver through the water. Their tails and spines also bear bioluminescent tendril-like appendages that can attract prey and other merpeople. Middle Sea Merpeople ↴ Middle sea residing merpeople are the most common to find as, unlike deep sea merpeople, they're able to survive for longer periods of time above water. Like some marine creatures, their scaly tails must be kept moist at all times. They often have shorter and fatter tails, specialized for moving through open spaces oppose to maneuvering through deep-sea canyons. Coastal Merpeople/Sirens ↴ Coastal merpeople, better known as sirens, are unique most of all to their species; most notably, they don't bear tails but have human legs. They can breathe underwater but are often more comfortable on land, though they bear fins along their elbows, shins, and ears as well as sharp fangs.
