Looks like this navigation method has promise with adaptive logic that changes the length of the forward sensor as the car makes it way down open road. Speed can be increased incrementally until the extended middle sensor (sensor, not "finger") touches something and triggers deceleration. The combination of obstacle sensing and open road sensing is how Case Western University won the open-road robotic car race.
