This season included a very intense Category 5 hurricane, Hurricane Karl. Karl struck Texas as a Category 5 hurricane, and became the costliest hurricane at the time and held that record until Hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Andrew caused over 10,000 fatalities in Haiti before causing major flooding in the Gulf Coast states. The season was also the most active season since 1990. The season also featured the most major hurricanes since 1969.
