A little backup about the Great Serum Race to Nome It all started with a case of dipetheria in Nome, Alaska in January, 1925. Soon everyone was getting it and the only transport was by dog sled. So twenty brave doctors sledded to nenana to fetch serum and save Nome from diptheria. Balto was the lead dog.
