“Our only tools to escape were a bag of sunflower seeds, a Swiss army knife, and a smooth, blue colored stone. We were doomed.” Sky told the story excitedly, Rose rolling her eyes at how into it she was. Sky ignored her, tucking her blond hair behind her ear, and continued. “Rose and I had never been in the mountains before, and certainly not when it was snowing!” she explained. The twin sisters were telling the story to Robin, who sat staring at them, enraptured. Rose decided to take over the storytelling. “It was supposed to be a ski trip with our neighbors, Opai, Pai, Minaba, and Minata, but we were lost and we didn’t have any reception. So they left, and we were left in a locked-up ski area at night!” Sky took her pause as an invitation for her to start talking. “It was a tiny resort, so they didn’t have ski patrol people go around, checking to make sure everyone was gone. After we’d sorted through our pockets and found those seemingly useless items, we knew we needed to find our way down the slope. Sadly, Rose-“ Sky elbowed Rose playfully, and Rose elbowed her sister back. “-is a terrible skier, and it was completely hopeless to try to make our way up OR down the double-black diamond that she had accidentally gotten to.” Rose shrugged, giving in. It was true- she COULDN’T ski like Sky had always been able to. Robin laughed. Rose continued the story. “She wanted to eat the sunflower seeds right away, but I told her that we should save them- especially since we’d eaten a hardy meal a couple hours ago. Sky was playing with her lucky rock, the bluish stone.” Sky nodded, patting her pocket where she stored it. “Then there was the Swiss army knife,” continued Rose. “I thought it might be useful. Maybe. Hard to say. But we didn’t need food, we needed shelter. It could get cold, NASTY cold at night on top of a mountain.” Sky piped in. “And then there was MY brilliant idea!” Robin arched her eyebrows, and Sky continued. “Take off our skis and walk down!” Robin laughed at the stupidity and simplicity of it, and Rose’s sparkling green eyes flashed with amusement as she said, “She expected me to walk down a completely vertical ski slope. With moguls. At night. Oh, and then be charged like $300 for all of the equipment we left up here.” Sky sighed. “It was a good idea!” she protested. “Anyway…” prompted Robin. “Yes, anyway.” Said Rose. “We managed to build a fire using the stone and the knife, plus some wood. We finally slept after a long time, then woke up and needed to figure out what to do. My fingertips were frostbitten…” she added, looking down at her white fingertips. “It’s surprisingly hard to walk around in ski boots. But using our poles, we found that it WAS possible to walk uphill. So after about a half hour of that,” she stopped partway through her sentence, thinking Sky would want to finish it. She was right, “Rose fell down!” Robin gasped. “Yup,” continued Sky. “So she had to spend another half hour climbing up again. And of course it was Sunday, the one day it was closed. So she got up, and after yet ANOTHER half hour, we struggled to the top of that slope. There was a blue run next, but that would be easier. “ Robin arched her eyebrows, not entirely sure that Rose- or Sky, for that matter- would make it anywhere without hurting themselves. “So THEN…” continued Rose. “I kept on walking up. And up. And up. And Sky slid down the slope.” They all cringed. “Yeah. Bad idea.” admitted Sky. “She wanted to get to where we were, so she could ski the rest of the way down,” explained Rose. “So I was stuck climbing up a hill. Eventually, I got to a lift.” “Meanwhile,” cut in Sky, “I was skiing down. I went inside the little booth where the ski dude sits, and figured out how to start the lift. Rose got ON at the top somehow, and she rode down.” “So. You were down at the bottom. What next?” asked Robin. “Well, from there, we could walk out. Of course, we had to call Opai and her sisters to come pick us up, because we had all taken one car. Fortunately, we had reception. Soon enough, they picked us up.” Rose explained “THEN, I finally got to eat the sunflower seeds.” Sky said, and Robin and Rose laughed. Suddenly, Robin asked, “You said this story had a moral to it, that’s why you were telling it to me. What’s the moral?” “Ahh, yes. The moral…” Sky paused for suspense. “Is to never listen to Rose!” Robin bubbled with laughter. “What do you mean?!” “Well, think about it. She told me that she couldn’t walk up the hill by taking her skis off, and she did! She said not to eat the sunflower seeds, but we were only there for one night! The list goes on…” And so the story ended happily. Robin went off to bed, and Rose and Sky went to the living room to talk to each other, as they did every night. They all agreed, a good story was a great way to end the day!
