Only he and one other troop member survived. Shrapnel was lucky; he only lost a leg. But his troop member lost half of their face, and could no longer hear or speak. After the attack, both survivors were given leaves from the army. The other troop member went under surgery to fix her face and senses, but she didn't survive the aftereffects. Shrapnel, however, recovered, yet politely denying a prosthetic leg, and became a messenger, delivering messages along a specific route. One of his routes, however, lead him past a small grove of cedar trees. Unknown to him, a strange, extraterrestrial rock had fallen from the sky, and was logged into one of the trees. This rock gave off a certain vibe that tended to make one's brain go... unstable... Because Shrapnel's route wasn't right against the grove, but a few yards away, he was affected very, very slowly, until he finally snapped. Halo tried to have him arrested and taken to a mental hospital, but Shrapnel escaped and fled to the Whisper Mountains, knowing no one would dare follow him onto the sacred grounds. After spending days with only his adled mind, Shrapnel stumbled across a river and drank greedily, being starved and dehydrated. But it was a special river; one of a few in the Whisper Mountains that had a certain magical element to them. This particular river cured someone of any illness, as long as they stayed near it. So stayed near it he did. Now Shrapnel follows the seemingly-endless river around the Mountains, often sleeping by day, and lying at the river's edge by night, wishing things could've been different, had he not been affected by that rock. Extra: --Loves swimming, especially in cold water --Is a night-owl; never seen in day (sleeping in dark, cold caves)
