In Earth Abides, Ish is part of a tribe created after most of man-kind was wiped out by a disease. It became a tradition for the tribe to name each of the new years and chisel them into a rock. The relationship between Ish and the rock is that by seeing it, Ish gradually realizes that it is time that he started looking for the person who would replace him as the leader of the tribe.
