Don't be too aggresive with the pen tool. Click on a shade of colour on the left hand side and press the up arrow to cycle through the colours. Right arrow changes the shade of the backdrop and space changes the hue. Mouse down for pen (duh) and up for... no pen????? c clears the canvas
