The Story of Faintwhisper Chapter 1 The Death of Silversight Faintwhisper laughed, darting around her friend Silversight. Silversight's tail just missed as Faintwhisper twisted under her. Thoughthearer, Silversight's sister, tried to flip out of the way as Silversight lurched towards her but didn't make it. Her sister's talons pressed into her wing and almost instantly disappeared. Thoughthearer made a face at the quickly retreating shape of Silversight, then thwacked Faintwhisper in the snout with her arm. "Tag!" Thoughthearer said, then added, "Sorry but no tagbacks!" She swooped away, settling herself on a ledge, knowing she couldn't get tagged. Faintwhisper flew after Silversight, darting around older dragons flying back with prey. She accidentally smacked into none other than Sharpclaws, an extremely unlikeable dragon that was Farseer's brainless sidekick. "Oh! Hi." Faintwhisper murmured as she regained her balance. "Watch it," Sharpclaws snapped. "It took me a long time to find prey fit for Farseer. I don't want to waste it smashing your head." "Jerk," she muttered as she flapped around him. He slapped her with his tail before he left. She winced as pain spread from her spine, but kept flying until it started to dull. Sharpclaws always used violence; you sort of got used to it. Faintwhisper scanned the sky. Silversight was hiding unsuccessfully in a tree, trying to blend in with the shadows. Faintwhisper spiraled down towards the tree just as Silversight looked up. Faintwhisper stretched out her talons. Silversight dove out of the tree, leaping into a column of smoke rising from the vents in the ground. Faintwhisper knew it was hopeless to follow her in there; she would have to wait it out. She hovered next to the smoke, waiting for Silversight to have to emerge. Finally the smoke completely disappeared, but Silversight wasn't there. "Hey Thoughthearer!" she called, landing next to her friend. You seen Silversight anywhere?" "Yeah. She was in that column of smoke. She never left it 'til it the smoke was all gone." Faintwhisper felt a stab of alarm. "You mean she didn't escape the other side?" "No. She was just hovering in there." "She wasn't in the smoke when it cleared though," Faintwhisper said, tensing for flight. "I'm going to go look for her." "Okay," Thoughthearer said with a shrug. "Good luck." "Um, thanks..." Faintwhisper said as she jumped from the ledge. She folded in her wings and dove towards the ground. It grew larger and larger, and then she opened her wings and soared parallel with the ground. She hastily dodged steam puffs rising from the vents and the lava before it could burn her. She reached the column of smoke where Silversight had disappeared and landed. It was dangerous to land in the vent area unless you knew when the vents would spurt lava; luckily Faintwhisper knew this place had no lava, just smoke. She pricked her ears for anything as her talons pressed into the hot rock. The smoke was heavy down here, but she made sure not to breathe often. The gray haze clung to her scales and didn't move when she tried to blow it away. The ash in the air made her eyes water, no matter how many times she blinked. She immediately decided she didn't like it there. "Faintwhisper!" She suddenly heard. It was so faint it could have from the Kingdom of Sand. "Silversight?" She called again. "Help me..." A cry so faint she still wasn't sure if it was in her head. She picked her way across the stone, trying to find her friend. Suddenly a cave opening yawned in front of her. She took a step back, then peered inside. Could she hear... breathing? "Silversight?" She called, really not wanting to go into the tunnels. Maybe Silversight was somewhere else... "Faintwhisper." A gasp. "Hurry..." Faintwhisper raced into the tunnel . "Silversight? Silversight!" "Hurry..." Faintwhisper whirled around and practically threw herself into the cave. Silversight was lying on the ground, her wings spread at awkward angles, a pool of blood slowly gathering around her. "Faintwhisper," She murmured, her half-closed eyes catching her friend's. "I'm sorry," She whispered. "I put it off. But it won't wait..." "Put what?" Faintwhisper muttered, backing away as the blood reached for her. "I'm prophetic," Silversight gasped. "I received a prophecy moons ago. . . . . ." Faintwhisper's jaw dropped as Silversight fell to the ground. "Find them, Faintwhisper. Find the seven." Then she shuddered. and her eyes closed. She was gone.
