The year is 2245 CE. At the turn of the 23rd century (Earth date 7/23/2201, Mars date 16/27/25), a law forbidding martian citizens from walking on the surface without oxygen masks passed by the International Council of Mars was finally lifted, as Mars was successfully terraformed and the still however carbon rich atmosphere was officially habitable. A mass exodus from Earth to Mars began - the Great Martian Boom. Now, in 2245, Mars is home to 2.3 billion citizens. After the Extraterrestrial Liberty Act of 2175 as well as the Martian Sovereignty Act of 2212, martian independence movements began and sovereign nations arose for the first time on Mars, the largest of which is the Martian Confederation, dominating Mars and rivaling colonial powers still existing on Mars. The martian economy is mainly run by two industries: Energy and Water. The massive amount of energy produced during the terraformation process is now stored and shipped across the solar system, and with space residences on the rise, water is in increasing demand, of which mars has plenty. The Martian Confederation seeks to dominate both industries, by claiming regions still frozen over near the poles, but the stubborn colonial governments still controlled by earthly nations do not support these power hungry ambitions. However, other independent nations of Mars are also regarding these industries with importance, as they scramble to gain a foothold on unclaimed land. As the Martian Confederation expands and earthly colonies gain independence, the rest of mars is confronted with the decision of joining the Confederation or attempting to rival it. However, within the Confederation internal conflicts exist between autonomous martian states, primarily between Tharsis, the largest of them, and its rival states. These conflicts may threaten the peace that has lasted the entire history of the planet. When a Dadaelian State Shipment of supplies in Euromars is put down by the Tharsis State Protection Unit after being suspected of delivering dangerous weapons, tensions continue to arise between both states of the Martian Confederation and the rest of Mars as well. An Ambassador of European holdings on Mars is sent to Tharsopolis, the capital of the Confederation, to try to restore peace after the conflict. With the entire Solar System watching, the planet hangs in the balance.
