This is for a school project. I read the book Code Talker by Joseph Bruchac. Song is: Zombie by The Cranberries I know the animation is kind of confusing, so I will explain. During WWII, the Japanese kept cracking American codes. They decided to make an unbreakable code using the hardest-to-learn known language: Navajo. This story follows Ned Begay. As a child, he was taken off to a boarding school along with many other Navajo children. The teachers were discriminatory and told them they could not speak Navajo any more, they would have to learn English and every time they spoke their native language, their mouths would be washed out with soap. Ned survives the boarding school and goes on to high school. There he learns of the Marines and their search for Navajos. Ned signs up and is sent into training. He is given a radio and told how to use it. He also helped add words to the code based on the Navajo language. Once his training is complete, Ned is sent overseas with the other Navajos. His duties are so secret that he can't even tell his fellow Marines. Only the other Code Talkers know the code. The war rages on and many tragedies occur. One island they come to is populated with Japanese civilians. They have been submitted to so much propaganda that when they see the Americans come, many think that death is better and kill themselves. Some woman would push their children off of cliffs, before following suit. Many Marines also died in the war. Some were unfortunate enough to come across the body of a passed friend. However, there was also some light. A small orphaned boy was befriended by the Marines and he soon found a home thanks to the red cross. Soon enough, the war was over. And the Marines and tragedies left, but traces of them still linger. The ghosts of the past will never fully dissipate, but they can fade. And fade they must for peace to be restored. However long it stays.
