Curated: 16ᵗʰ Sep 2018 Top Loved: 17ᵗʰ - 18ᵗʰ Sep 2018 It's 10 years to the day since I joined Scratch on the fine summer Sunday of 20th July, 2008. From that day on, I never once left. When signing up, I was only Scratch's 140,090ᵗʰ registered user. Now there's over 30,000,000 (30 million) accounts. Astounding, right? Scratch 1.2.1 is the version with which I started out, and I saw it evolve into the 2.0 era and now its forthcoming third major iteration. What I find most unique about the projects I've made is that you see me gradually grow from complete beginner to the coder I am today. I used to think broadcasts operated only on certain keywords such as "Start". I was that naïve, but there's no shame in starting somewhere! Like many others, my inability to fulfill project ideas early on frustrated me. I even initiated some collaborations that miserably fell apart. My breakthrough came with the Harry Potter videogames. They were the kind of games I wished could be found online, so I made them! Whenever I took breaks from making projects, I was always active on Scratch in some way, such as through its nascent music scene. This is most associable with my work for Frozen Coco (the first rock band formed on Scratch), as a songwriter, performer and producer. Each band mate would record their instruments/vocals to a consistent tempo and all tracks would then be mixed using an audio program. We were the first to release an EP and full-length album, developing a good following outside Scratch. I later began a solo music career too. In recent years, I've put out a bunch of informative projects on Harry Potter (a run of 16 straight releases which was broken by this one). The goal was for me to self-improve while working on each of these smaller-scale projects, by challenging myself with new techniques. One such project gave me my most novel experience as a Scratcher: Coding one of the most real-time multiplayer duel engines on Scratch. There's something about battling humans online, and to do so against hundreds of users in a wizard duel of your own creation was surreal. I do believe its heavy request load influenced the slower cloud system change in 2016. The duel no longer works, but isn't that kind of cool?! Across 10 years, I have many fond memories to look back on. I hope this great site can tickle your imagination as it did mine. Scratch on! -
