CHECK TW BEFORE READING “Patton, come on, buddy, please, please, just stay with me...” Virgil pleaded. Patton laughed weakly and ended up coughing. “Kiddo, don’t… don’t worry about me. H-hey, don’t cry, alright? Please?” It was no use- Virgil was already sobbing, stumbling over his words. “I can’t l-lose you, Patton, p-please, just hold on a little longer. I called 911- the a-ambulance should be here any minute-” Patton shook his head, the smile slowly fading from his face. “Virge, I need you to promise me you’re going to be okay. Alright?” Virgil shook his head. “No, no, you’re not leaving me. They’ll be here any s-second, Patton-” “Virge, please?” Patton interrupted. “Promise me.” Virgil wiped away the tears streaming down his face. “Okay, yeah, fine, I promise, but that doesn’t mean you can leave now, okay?” The smile on Patton’s face reappeared for a moment. “Thank you, kiddo.” And then the smile disappeared from his face. And Virgil could tell Patton was gone. __ “Virgil? Virgil, are you alright?” Virgil woke with a start, his heart pounding and his breathing heavy. He glanced up to see Logan on the edge of his bed. “Wh- what’s going on?” “I believe you were having a nightmare. You were talking in your sleep and tossing. You also seem to have been crying.” “I-” Virgil stopped and looked around. He was in his room, and no one was there except for him and Logan. “Oh. I- I’m sorry, I must have woken you up.” Logan shook his head. “I was up late. No need to worry, everyone else is still asleep. I think Patton is physically incapable of waking up because of noise. The alarm clock didn’t even work…” Logan’s voice grew quieter as Virgil’s thoughts clouded it. He pushed his sheets aside and got up out of bed. “Virgil, what are you doing?” “Nothing,” Virgil covered. “Just… taking a walk.” he said, leaving before Logan had a chance to answer. Virgil entered Patton’s room, taking intense care to be quiet, until he remembered what Logan had said. He walked up to the side of Patton’s bed and carefully shook him. “Patton?” Patton rolled over in his bed, still half-asleep. “Yes, Tug, you /are/ a good boy,” he muttered. “Patton?” Virgil repeated, louder. "Hmm?" Patton mumbled, sitting up in bed. "Virgil? Kiddo, what's going on? It's nearly 1 AM! You should be getting your sleep!" "I know, Pat, I know-" Virgil hesitated. "I just wanted to talk to you for a minute." Patton looked concerned. “What's wrong?” “Nothing, nothing, I just- kind of had a bad dream. And I just came to talk to you to make sure I know you're okay. I know that sounds silly, but-” Patton shook his head, cutting Virgil off. “No, I understand. And I’m completely and totally alright, ‘kay?” Virgil nodded slowly. “I’d hate to keep you up- but can I just talk to you? For a while?” Patton smiled. A smile ten times more genuine than the ones he had in the dream. Which made Virgil feel a lot better. “Of course, kiddo.”
