They give Luigi lives. To release an item from a ? box, jump up and hit it from underneath. Super Mushroom: This red mushroom allows Luigi to take damage 1 time before losing a life. Mini Mushroom: This blue mushroom makes Luigi smaller and lightweight, allowing him to jump higher and run faster. However, he will lose a life after 1 hit. Ice Flower: This power-up gives Luigi the ability to shoot ice balls. He can freeze enemies. Frozen enemies will appear in an ice box, which serves as a platform. However, they soon thaw out. While the are frozen, Luigi can ground-pound them to defeat them. This power-up gives him the Super Mushroom power-up after he takes 1 hit. Enemies: Paragoombas: These are flying goombas. Stomp them from above once to bring them to ground level and a second time to defeat it. Another option is to freeze them and to ground-pound them afterwards. Bullet Bills: These enemies shoot out of cannons. They will hurt Luigi if he touches them unless he stomps them from above first in which case they are defeated. With a mini mushroom, he is invincible to Bullet Bills and can bounce of them for a height boost if he touches them and presses the up arrow key.
