His magic is a lot like Gajeel they trained under the same master but Spade decided to go separate ways with Gajeel. Once he found out that Gajeel was part of a dark guild he went over to the guild to confront Gajeel who eventually (with some more persuading from Makarov) finally joined Fairy Tail. Around the same time Lightnin joined Fairy Tail he did to and that's about it so far.
