He had just put on a singing and dancing performance of his own, though it was actually a musical. He looked around at the posters on his walls, and smiled contently. This was the dream. He couldn't be happier. Someone knocked on his door. Devon opened it. The roaring of his fans made what his visitor said inaudible, but the next thing he knew the visitor was in a chair, making himself at home. He opened his mouth to object, but the visitor held up a hand. "Jack Carter. I work with a certain agency, and I'd like to recruit you.". Devon blinked. "I...uh...um...what?". Jack chuckled. "Ah, yes. We've noticed your amazing acting skills, and we think you'd make a good spy.". He sputtered "Oh. Th-th-th-thanks, I guess?". Jack nodded "Hmm. So, I've heard your company's considering throwing you?". Devon frowned "What! Uh, n-no". Jack smiled "You're a good actor, but a terrible liar. So. Would you like the job?". He blinked "Oh! Um...what would I do?". "Spy, mostly. If we make you a good liar, you could probably be super useful.". "That...sounds kinda good. Sure, I guess". Jack grinned "Perfect. Meet me in the square tomorrow".

"He should be here by now" she grumbled. As if summoned, her visitor walked in, the shutting doors sending an echo around the chamber. He narrowed his eyes "You asked for me?" her visitor asked. Maxine looked at him. "Yes. Virgo, I was wondering if you could...take care of something for me. Mr.Carshire said something about...someone named Alice? I'm not sure, but he wants to...take her to a better place". Virgo's tail twitched. A sign of reluctance. But he nodded "Yes, Maxine. I'll do it immediately". She narrowed her eyes "Yes, please do. You can go now. That's all.". As Virgo padded away, his elegant figure slipping out the doors, Maxine sat. If Virgo wasn't hiding something, she was a rat. And she was never a rat. Her ears twitched. Virgo was her second in command. She had raised him. If he betrayed her, she might never forgive him. Maxine walked the hallways of the den, where she lived. Ever since she was a puppy, she had roamed these halls. Her family abandoned her. Maxine had been taken in by a well-to-do lord, who trained her to do his bidding. He was a gambler, secretly. Whenever he lost a bet, or wanted revenge on someone, he would send her to take care of them. One day, he got into a fight with his wife and decided she was keeping him from something. He sent Maxine to kill his wife, but she resisted. Instead, Maxine slipped poison in his morning coffee. She left and created a band of thieves. She took in the abandoned, the unwanted, and the misfits. They continued to do gambler's dirty work, but Maxine made a rule, or a reminder. 'What we do may not be right, it may not be just, but it keeps us alive. I can tell you, if there was another way to survive, I would take it. But there isn't. Though we kill for a living, remember. It is not the answer to our problems, and it will never be'. A sound at the end of the hall snapped her back into reality. Two figures crept towards the exit. Maxine padded forward, and in a moment was blocking their way. Virgo's familiar face shone in the moonlight. He stood next to a smaller golden retriever. Maxine growled. "I'm guessing this is Alice" she said, flattening her ears. Virgo stood taller "Let us go. Please. Sh-she's his daughter. And I love her.". Maxine stepped back, she shock washing over her like a wave. "Y-you're leaving? Virgo, I...I...Please don't leave. Please, don't go". He growled "Step aside". Just as Maxine was about to respond, the blare of sirens outside made them all jump back in fear. "Come out and lay with your bellies up. We've got you surrounded. Blue, red and white lights streamed through the holes in the ceiling. Maxine looked back at them. "Come on". She said, rushing towards the exit only she knew of. As the cold night air touched her fur, she realized there was no way out. They were surrounded. Unless...unless she created a diversion. Maxine looked back at Virgo and Alice. "Run when they're not looking, okay?". Before anything could stop her, she bounded forward, teeth bared, and bit down on the officer's leg. He howled in pain. She turned around and felt a blistering pain in her left eye. Everything went black. The last thing Maxine saw was Virgo and Alice dashing away. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Credit to for the designs Dear Evan Hansen for the actual music I did the sound effects ;u; and the art UwU
