The RGB value is reported as a hex value from 000000 to FFFFFF. Each component is a value from 00 to FF. Multiplying the red component by 65536 shifts it 4 places to the left, multiplying the green by 256 shifts it 2 places, giving a value representing RRGGBB. So the mulitiplying is used to represent the colour as a single number.
