For my Civics class- enjoy! SCRIPT: After a sssseven year revolutionary war against the British to gain their independence, The Americans needed a new government for their new nation. They had to consider what they wanted their government to be, and they wanted to make sure that they didn’t recreate the British dictatorship. But first they had to ask themselves - what is government? Most people think of government buildings when they think of government, such as the Capitol building, home of the legislative branch, or the White House where the president lives. But government is not just the buildings, but what happens inside of them - A government is the system of making the rules for a group of people. The government officials have the role of governing the whole nation with financial, military and civil laws. There are different ways that government can control its people based on who gets the power and the systems in place for that power to be used. America chose to create a democracy, where the power would be split into branches and the people would elect the officials. In this Democracy, everyone 18 and older has the right to vote, despite age, gender, race, or wealth. The people also have many rights secured by the constitution, such as the freedom of speech, the freedom of press and the freedom of religion. They are also given fair criminal proceedings and the right to a speedy and fair trial with an impartial jury, and if they are convicted, no excessive bail or unfair punishment should be inflicted. And of course, the American democracy has set up a education system, and everyone has intellectual freedom, or the freedom to learn any information without restriction The Constitution could be considered one of the most important government documents, as it has lasted through the years more than any other legal document. It can be compared to a flexible ruler, as it may have to bend from time to time, but it will always measure up (buh dum crash). The Constitution lasts because is simple enough to be used when the culture and technology changes, but also covers important topics with distinct rules. For example, anyone without a criminal record has the right to own and handle a firearm, and no matter how stupid someone may be, they have the freedom to say what they want, as long as it doesn’t cause imminent danger. The government also maintains a free market, so anyone can start a business, but this means you have to pay for your own healthcare, insurance, food, and other necessities The Bill of rights protects our way of life everyday not just in giving us freedoms, but also knowing what to restrict. For example, in court, you cannot be be in jeopardy for the same crime twice. You also have the right to protect your property, which means the you are not required to quarter troops from the army, and your property cannot be searched or seized without a warrant or probable cause - just watch out for eminent domain, which allows the government to take away your property if they give you a reasonable amount of money in return. And finally, the Bill of rights prevents other people’s rights from stopping your rights, so a person’s day in court isn't squandered by someone else’s freedom of speech. Also, the Bill of rights gives you rights that aren’t even written down, as powers not delegated to the US are reserved to the states or to you.
