Emerald is the only child, so her cousin (Golden Jewel,) was like a sister. Every day after school, Golden Jewel would pick her up, and bring her to her house, so they could play. Emerald was devastated when Golden died. 5 years later, Emerald was exploring her cousin's house. All of her belongings were kept there. Her Aunt and Uncle kept the house, and made sure it was clean, and nothing was stolen. No one was there, so Emerald was alone. For the first time in 5 years, Emerald was crying. She never cried much, because usually she is happy, and cheery. As she walked into Golden's room, she felt a rush of happiness. Happy memories flooded her mind. Like when she played with the small doll house with Golden. And when she shared secrets with her, as Golden did the same to Emerald. Immediately, Emerald noticed a box overflowing with gems on top of Golden's wooden desk. She picked up a emerald that was on the top of the pile. She remembered when Golden showed her the jewels. She liked this one in particular. The lime green, glistening in the light. It's smooth texture, feeling soft between her hooves. "That's why your name is Emerald," is what her cousin said. She still thought the emerald was particularly the prettiest. "You may keep that one if you'd like." Emerald turned around quickly, to see her aunt. She didn't notice that her aunt had been in the house all along. Emerald smiled, with her eyes filled with tears. She hugged her aunt, with her heart stuck in her throat. Emerald from then on studied jewels in school, particularly the emerald. Every month, she went mining with her Aunt and Uncle. She earned her cutie mark by finding a emerald on her first try, which was very rare.
