There is convection in the mantle causing an upwelling where mountains will form. It is also a cycle Examples of convection: Lava Lamp, You know those little blobs, well they rise and fall due to the tempurature. When the heat up, it gets less dense so it floats up. As it cools, it gets more dense so it sinks.
