Highly beta, glitches are EVERYWHERE. Just to prevent some, do not talk to the green Toad until you have helped the Goombas and given the mushroom to the red Toad. Do not talk to Koopa until you have defeated Swooper in world two. Do not exit Petey Piranha's mouth when he attempts to eat, just be eaten, or else the game breaks. In terms of work, it's not down either, only goes up to the end of world two.
