Click dat flag twice and enjoy! Yeah! (Warning: Sad ending) Summary: This is the story of two young boys who are friends and live on a volcanic island. Jiya lives on the beach and his father is a fisherman while Kino and his family live and farm on the side of a mountain. We also learn that Jiya and his family along with the other fishermen are scared of the sea because tidal waves caused by volcanic eruptions have hit the beach before killing and destroying the village. One day the big wave does return and kills everyone on the beach along with Jiya’s family. Jiya is devastated by the loss of his family and his village. It takes a while for him to recover and meanwhile Kino’s family has agreed to adopt him as a son. However we soon find out that “Old Gentleman,” a wealthy landowner who is kind enough to provide shelter to many people who lost their homes, also wants to take Jiya in as his own son. Now Jiya has to make a choice between Old Gentleman and Kino’s family, but in the end he chooses Kino’s family because he feels that he will be happier there. Then the story fasts forwards to when Kino and Jiya are young men and they see people building houses once again on the beach. This causes a commotion throughout the community. Nobody has built on the beach since the big wave! Even Old Gentleman walks up to them trying to stop the men who had been living within his castle. Jiya also seems confused by the choice that the men had made. He asks them if they are not afraid that the big wave will come back. The men say that they are only doing what every previous generation had done after they were hit by the wave. In a moment of realization Jiya decides to buy himself a boat and eventually build his own house on the beach. After buying his boat Jiya finally admits to Kino that he loves Setsu, Kino’s sister, and he wants to marry her. And so the story ends with them moving to their new home on the beach, with windows open towards the water, literally facing their fears.
