I woke up, lying face down in the dirt. Why the dirt you ask? Because that just happened to be where I was sleeping, what of it? Anyway, after I woke up, I stood up, and started walking home. The street was empty, and yet I felt myself being watched. I understand that when you're going anywhere, it's right to be paranoid. I have more than a few reasons, not the least of which being the object I had just found. I turn into my neighborhood. It's like those places you see on TV, well, if you can afford one, anyway. A TV, I mean. It's one of those run-down neighborhoods. All the houses are in different stages of disrepair or being overtaken by nature, all that crap. My house happens to be one of the smallest. An unassuming structure halfway down the road, with peeling paint, a roof held together with duct tape and chewing gum, and a small dribble of smoke meandering its way out of the chimney. The road is about two miles long, and not even paved. Everyone here is in a different stage of poverty or depression, and yet hope lives on. "Hey, Will!" I heard my name being called out. I jogged over to the front door, and saw a scruffy little kid of about 9 leaning out of the window. He had brown hair and freckles, and his clothing was faded, and a bit tattered. "Jayce! What have I told you about being up there? Get down!" I called. Jayce looked surprised, and fell backwards onto the couch. As you have all seen, that was Jayce. He's overenthusiastic and hyper, but all in all, not bad company to have around. And he occasionally has good ideas. Occasionally. I open the door, and walk into the house. I heard some squealing, and two blurs rushed down the stairs, and hugged me. Two more little kids. I'm in charge of taking care of these rascals. I don't really remember how it happened, but it's not bad. The two hugging me are Tommy and Jade. Tommy is a ginger, and he's shy, but genuinely likes making friends and believes in the goodness of humanity. He has a dark red hoodie that's three sizes too big for him. I think it used to be mine, actually. Jade is a bit more mysterious. She has black hair and green eyes, and doesn't talk much. She's really sweet and cares for everyone, and she's what keeps the other two in line. "Will! Did you get any food?" Tommy asked, his eyes shining with anticipation. I sighed in resignation, "No, not this time." I ruffled his hair, "Sorry, kid." Tommy looked dejected. I had to get some cookies from the pantry to cheer them up. They greedily eat them, and I send the kids to bed. After they're gone, I sit down on the couch, and pull the object that I found out of my backpack. A pristine, white, circular mask, with no eye or mouth holes. I don't know how I knew it was a mask, but it just... felt that way. I examined it for a minute, and put it on. All of a sudden, I appeared to be somewhere else. Floating in a space-like plane, I think. But then the whispers started. "Who are you?" They said. It felt as if the words were projected into my brain, like some sort of telepathy. They didn't say anything more, so I assumed I needed to answer. "My name is William Fisher." "Good. Now, what is your quest?" "I don't have one, just to keep me and the little rascals alive." "I see." "So who are you?" "I am the mask..." The voice faded out, and all of a sudden I was jerked back to reality. Was that real? "What just happened?" I think aloud, not really expecting an answer. Then, the mask I'd just put on started changing. [END]
