i'm gonna tell ya a story. back in late 2015, i got splatoon for my birthday. I FREAKING LOVED IT (but not as much as i love smash bros for wii u and super mario maker back at that time because i wasn't really into the series that much). the bad thing is, you needed the TV to play it, and i hardly got the chance to play it because a lot of people uses my TV so therefore i missed a lot of splatfests. BUT, when splatoon 2 came out, i was freaking out like crazy but i didn't have a switch. i got splatoon 2 in 2017 for christmas. believe me i still love it as much as i do now. honestly i prefer splatoon 1 for nostalgic reasons.
