He was gnawing on a small stick, thinking of reasons for not liking this Berk. “*Is t-too sunny,*” he muttered to himself, “*n-not wet enough.*” He glanced over at the large black dragon, also called Toothless, standing near his Master, who was also named Hiccup. ‘The Other Toothless’ (as Toothless called him) was the main reason Toothless didn’t like the island. He was always such a show-off, and all the dragons seemed to obey him, though Toothless couldn’t understand why. In fact, he could barely understand the foreign dragons at all-- their Dragonese was…. Different. Sloppier, in Toothless’s opinion. The Other Hiccup, who was chief over this Berk, was talking to Hiccup. About what, Toothless didn’t know, he was too far away to hear them, but he assumed it had something to do with Camicazi. She had recently stolen The Other Hiccup’s prosthetic leg attachment and hidden it. The Other Hiccup was currently using a spare, but it was obviously not as nice as the one Camicazi had taken-- it squeaked a lot more and would occasionally come loose and start falling out. Personally, Toothless didn’t care that Camicazi had taken the good leg. The Other Toothless wandered away from the two Hiccups and towards Toothless. “*I hope that wood wasn’t part of anything important,*” he growled suspiciously. “*Is just from a t-tree!*” Toothless insisted, holding up the stick for The Other Toothless to see. “*Hmm… alright then,*” The Other Toothless nodded as he saw that it was indeed just a stick from a tree. “*But why are you eating wood in the first place?*” “*B-because my Master says I h-have to eat my wood, and Toothless an /obedient/ dragon,*” Toothless said with a hint of pride in his voice at being so obedient. The Other Toothless tilted his head in confusion. “*You have to eat wood?*” “*Yes,*” Toothless said, stripping the bark off the wood and eating it. “*W-why have I never seen /y-you/ eat wood? I t-thought you was a perfect obedient pet.*” The Other Toothless wrinkled his nose and growled softly, “*I’m not a /pet/, I’m Hiccup’s /companion/. And I don’t need to eat wood, why would I??*” Toothless froze in surprise at The Other Toothless’s response. Then he slowly narrowed his eyes until they were just small green slits, his neck inflating to twice its size. ~~ Hiccup had found Camicazi hanging out with Ruffnut and Tuffnut at the edge of the village as they poured some Itchyworms down Snotlout’s shirt. Snotlout was completely oblivious until the Itchyworms started biting him, then he ran off shrieking and laughing as the Itchyworms swarmed across his chest and arms. Hiccup wondered where they had even gotten the Itchyworms before remembering that Camicazi always carried some with her. He sighed and shook his head in exasperation, walking up to the short blonde girl. “Oh, hi Hiccup!” Camicazi greeted him cheerfully. “Have you met Ruff and Tuff yet? They’re AWESOME!” She fist-bumped her new friends, grinning broadly. “Yes, I have,” Hiccup replied. “Have you seen Chief Hiccup’s leg? His prosthetic one?” “Hmm…. Maybe, maybe not!” the small Bog-Burglar replied, still smiling. “Want to join me and The Twins as we go steal Astrid’s axes?” she changed the subject. “No, Camicazi, you need to stop stealing stuff!” Hiccup said hurriedly. “Spitelout wasn’t pleased when he found out his helmet and belt were missing, and he won’t be happy when he finds out you’ve been dumping Itchyworms down his son’s shirt.” “Actually, I don’t think he’ll really care about the Itchyworms,” Tuffnut chimed in. “And Snotlout was being a jerk earlier, he deserved it,” Ruffnut added helpfully. Hiccup shot them a quick glare. He was trying to convince Camicazi that letting Itchyworms loose /wasn’t/ okay. He opened his mouth to say something else, but was interrupted by a loud shriek of “*MASTER!! M-MASTER!!!*”
Hiccup immediately recognized the voice as Toothless’s. He sounded like he was in trouble. “*I’M COMING TOOTHLESS!!*” he shouted, running towards the source of the sound, leaving Camicazi and The Twins behind, looking confused. Hiccup ran as fast as he could, the cries of “*MASTER!*” getting louder as he got closer to his destination. He skidded to a stop beside the hut he’d been staying in, slipping and nearly falling down. He caught himself just in time and scooped up Toothless, who was still screeching. Chief Hiccup’s riding dragon Toothless was nearby, his ears flattened and his lips lifted in a slight snarl, revealing sharp teeth. Hiccup held his dragon close, checking him for any wounds. “*Are you okay, Toothless? What happened??*” Toothless whimpered, his face buried in Hiccup’s waistcoat. After a few moments and pulled his head out and let out an earsplitting scream of “*NOT FAIR!! IS N-NOT FAIR!!!*” Hiccup had assumed that The Other Toothless had been attacking his Toothless, but now he saw -or rather, heard- that he was wrong. Cautiously, he asked, “*What’s not fair?*” “*B-big black Newt-With-Wings doesn’t h-have to eat wood!!*” Toothless wailed while The Other Toothless backed away to escape the sound. Hiccup sighed, his head hurting. “*Toothless, I can’t do anything about it,*” he explained. “*We’re in a different world -or at least, that’s what it seems like- so the dragons here must not need to eat wood.*” “*B-but is not FAIR,*” Toothless sniffled, hot tears dripping down his face. “*Toothless w-work so hard to eat his w-wood and Newt-With-Wings not HAVE to!*” Hiccup stroked Toothless behind his horns soothingly. “*Hey, hey, it’s okay. I appreciate your hard work. And you know what?*” he added, “*The Other Toothless isn’t a special sea-dragon like you are. Just imagine-- when you’re all grown up you’ll be bigger than him! Not just because you’re a sea-dragon, but because you ate your wood.*” Toothless blinked up at his master, his eyes clearing up a bit. “*Y-you think so?*” He crawled onto Hiccup’s head and puffed out his chest proudly. He looked a bit ridiculous, still somewhat red in the face and with tears sticking to his cheeks, but he let out a triumphant rooster crow, spreading his wings to look bigger. Then he flew down towards The Other Toothless. “*T-toothless going to grow up bigger than you!*” he sang tauntingly, swooping around The Other Toothless’s head. The Other Toothless rolled his eyes. He was tired of this dragon constantly annoying him. He walked off to find his Hiccup, the small dragon following him while letting out snarky comments every now and then. Hiccup sighed in relief, watching the two dragons leave. At least Toothless was back to normal now, and he could go back to getting Camicazi to behave.
