A soft voice pierced the silence of the night. "Mommy?" There was a pause and then a hushed response. "Yes, Splash?" "Why did we leave?" The voice gained some volume, but was quickly shushed. "We left because we had to." The deeper, more feminine voice replied. "We left because they were going to hurt us." "But... Why? What did we do wrong?" Stormy blue eyes flashed awake in the night, glinting in the silvery haze of the moon. There was a painful pause. "We didn't do anything wrong." "Then why...?" "Splash," the voice started- cutting the young voice off- "no more questions." For a long while it was silent, the only noise coming from the faint chirp of crickets. A ways off a herd of elk grazed, occasionally grunting or tromping through the underbrush that broke the evening's peace. "Okay, mommy." Splash whispered, snuggling closer into her silver chest fur. She drew in a painful breath. She loved the little one dearly, she did, but she was also frightened by her affections for him. She was so afraid... Afraid to hurt him, even if it wasn't intentional. She was afraid to mislead him, or to drive him off... "Mom?" Her train of thought derailed. "Yes, Splash?" "Could... could you sing me a lullaby?" His voice quivered- as if he were afraid to ask. She hesitated, drawing back on her memories in an attempt to think of one. "Sure." Her voice was scarce- riddled with nervousness. He snuggled up closer, so close that her heartbeat pounded against his ears. "Carry on my wayward son... There'll be peace when you are done... Lay your weary head to rest... Don't you cry no more..." Her voice trailed off, remembering to when her father had howled a similar tune. Splash watched her with saucers for eyes, soaking in the song. "Once I rose above the noise and confusion... Just to get a glimpse beyond this illusion... I was soaring ever higher..." She paused, "but I flew too high... Though my eyes could see I still was a blind man... Though my mind could think I still was a madman... I hear the voices when I'm dreaming... I can hear them say..." Splash's eyes shut, his breathing steadying. "Carry on my wayward son..." A tear slipped from one eye, sliding down her muzzle and landing on the grass below. How long ago was it, that her father had sang this song? "There'll be peace when you are done... Lay your weary head to rest..." There was a faint snore as another tear slipped out. "Don't you cry no more..."
