Mary Elizabeth Bowser was born around 1840, and was freed by Van Lew. Van Lew hires Bowser as an undercover Union spy, disguised as a domestic servant in the Confederacy's presidents, Jefferson Davis' mansion. As a result she was able to find... stuff. What she found was destroyed to protect her, so as far as I know she just was a spy.
