Hi everyone, and welcome to Nettle's MerMay art for 2019! Use the left and right arrow keys to move to another artwork. NOTE: I drew Days 5 and 20 in a program called Inkscape. Scratch does not want to load Inkscape drawings, so until I have figured out how to get them on Scratch, Day 5 and Day 20 will be blank. Day 1: Amulet: A mermaid amulet. Day 2: Harry Potter: Since May 2nd is the anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts, I drew a random Harry Potter mermaid to honor it. Day 3: Wicked Mermaid: I was planning on giving her a horned helmet and a clawed staff, etc., but then I ran out of time. I'm not as happy with how this turned out. Day 4: Star Wars Day: Ahsoka!!! I had a partially finished Ahsoka design, and decided to turn it into a mermaid. The other Ahsoka will be in an art dump at some point. Day 5: Pearl: See note. Day 6: Exotic: I had a lot of fun with this one, especially with the frills. Day 7: Kelp: I enjoyed drawing this as well. It was fun to experiment with different sizes. Day 8: Squid: This is one of my favorites. It was a lot of fun to figure out how to make a . . . mersquid? (Squidmaid? Squid mermaid?) Day 9: Deep Ocean: I saw the prompt and my immediate thought was "Bio-luminescence!" So, here's a bio-luminescent mermaid. Day 10: Tropical: I used tropical-ish colors for this one, but otherwise, she's not very tropical. It was fun to use a different kind of shading on the hair, though. Day 11: Seahorse: I am really not happy with how this turned out, but I ran out of time. Day 12: Mother's Day: I really enjoyed drawing this, and it was fun to use the same colors to make the mother and the daughter. Day 13: Monday: This may or may not be me on a Monday morning as a mermaid. Day 14: Butterfly: I considered drawing a flock of butterflies (is that what a group of butterflies is called?), but thought it would be a bit much. I do like how her hair turned out. Day 15: Turtle: I like how this turned out, but I wish I had more time to make the turtlemaid (merturtle?) more detailed. Day 16: Old Mermaid: This one was challenging to do; I'm a lot better at drawing teenagers or young adults than at drawing older people. But I really do like how she turned out. I probably could have made her outfit more detailed, though. Day 17: Warrior: I loved this prompt, and I love drawing armor, so I had a lot of fun. Day 18: Flight: Winged Mermaid!! I really enjoyed drawing this. Day 19: Jellyfish: This one was . . . complicated. I decided to simplify my usual style, because she would have become very detailed if I hadn't. I am happy with how my simplified version turned out. Day 20: Honeybee: See note. Day 21: Punk/Goth: I have never met anyone who is punk or goth, so I winged this a bit. Day 22: Lunar: Originally I was going to draw a mermaid in a spacesuit on the moon, but then I realized that a mermaid would most likely be on the moon in a lunar base, thus, the mermaid is looking out a window. Day 23: Space: This one was SO MUCH FUN to draw! This may be my favorite MerMay for this year. Day 24: Shrimp: Not very accurate, I know. Day 25: Geek: Mermaid reading a book. Not the most creative thing I've ever drawn. Day 26: Ice Mermaid: For some reason, I really enjoyed drawing a mermaid sitting on an iceberg. Day 27: Electric: I had grand plans for this, and they kind of flopped. Day 28: Royal: I like the idea, but I'm not sure how well I executed the pose I put her in. Day 29: Starfish: I probably should have made the starfish more detailed, but I was feeling lazy. Day 30: Drummer: Not much explanation needed, really. Day 31: Free draw! I didn't feel like drawing a face.
The idea of MerMay does not belong to me. I used two different sets of prompts, and I mixed them up a bit to make my own prompts.
