For this assignment, we had to make a game using the Scratch application on a Mac computer. In the beginning we had many ideas, but the one we all agreed on was a space theme. We decided to have an alien that has to get to his home planet, Saturn, but had to solve simple math problems along the way. The idea and story board worked out really well. When it was time to get started, we began with drawing the different backgrounds. We imported an alien sprite and then came the hard part...adding the scripts to the different sprites and backgrounds to make them move. We decided to have each different background of our game have a different problem, and it would get harder as the player progressed. For example, we started with addition, then did subtraction, then lastly multiplication. The way we made the game work was having the player click on the correct answer out of about 3 to 4 digits. Then, if the player got the answer correct, they'd have to click on the key at the bottom of the right hand corner to move on to the next stage. This would be the same on each level. While programming this game we made many adjustments. For example when we first started we wanted to make the alien jump and move to the numbers; but then we figured out a simpler way of just clicking the number. During the process of programming our game, we learned many skills that we didn't know before when we first received the assignment. When we finished the game, we compared our progression from the beginning of the programming to the end and noticed that we learned a lot about Scratch and programming in general. We were surprised and felt accomplished to see how much we had learned throughout the process of making this game. The goal of this game was to teach the player simple math problems that they know, and eventually have the alien return to its home planet and see his father again while being able to master the simple math problems along the way. In the end we were able to make something amazing were and we able to learn many new things.
