Save for one; an old man who'd lived in a secluded house near the edge of town for as long as anyone could remember. He was cruel and didn't spare anyone from a sharp blow with the iron cane he always carried. The town despised him, and most people weren't afraid to voice their opinion on how soon they'd like him to move out or leave the town in another sort of way. When he finally did pass, the townsfolk rejoiced, and many of them continued on with their lives for a few days. Then a rather rebellious group of young adults decided it'd be a final insult to injury towards the old miser if they raided his house before anyone came to collect his things. They broke in that night and snooped around, taking a few assorted knickknacks, and then one of them stumbled across a dusty old book. A rather large book, bigger than both his hands side-by-side, and it caught their interest; what were they supposed to do next other than open it? But the second the moonlight filtering in through the windows touched the words on the page, they began to glow and suddenly sprang to life! A creature stepped out of the pages and although the would-be thieves quickly fled the scene, their lives were never the same after that. The mean old man might forever have been gone from Shadeport, but something even more twisted had taken its place. It was terrifying at first; a few citizens were attacked or even went missing, but those who made it past the first few weeks of terror quickly learned a new way of life. Don't go outside at night, lock your doors and leave at least one light on at all time, and just to be safe leave an offering out for the demon every now and again. From a fish skeleton to a bar of candy, it seems satisfied with anything it gets as long as it gets something. But the final and most important rule of all is this: nobody is allowed to leave Shadeport under the monster's watch. Those who try never make it where they're going and are never seen or heard from again.
