This is a speech I wrote on equality! Throughout history, there have been people who have been oppressed. There have been minorities. There have been people who lost a lot of what they had. Countries take over other countries. People go to war. But, why? People think they are better. People want power. They don’t understand the impact they make on the lives of others. Their actions affect other people and sometimes have huge consequences. One example of this is World War 2. Hitler disliked Jews, so he tried to get rid of them, hurting their society. He wanted to take over the world. Millions of people died. People have yet to realize that everybody is equal and deserves equal opportunities. Nobody deserves to be treated differently. The most remembered example of injustice in the world is gender equality. For hundreds of years, men thought they were better than women. They made women stay at home and wouldn’t let them buy properties. They were treated like property themselves. They could not choose who they would marry, nor what they would become. It was a horrible time for women, but there were some exceptions. One was the kingdom of Sparta, in Ancient Greece, where women had almost the same rights as men and were taught to fight as well as them. It was a symbolic time because not only were the Spartans an elite fighting force, they were almost entirely equal. And even now, we don’t have completely equal rights, proving how advanced a society they were. If we made progress to the extent they did, we would be a much more equal country. A fight for equality that is still going on is based around the LGBTQ+ community. There are hundreds, thousands, millions of people who support the community, and same-gender marriage is legal. But, there are still so many people who are against those in the LGBTQ+ community. They believe it is wrong for many reasons, mainly religion. People are shunned because of those people though they did nothing but be who they are. It is not fair, and when things like this happen, it is angering. Another huge example of inequality is discrimination because of race. One race thought they were better than all the others. They had slaves. The slaves were freed, but even people say that racism still exists in our society. The color of your skin shouldn’t determine how you are treated or restrict what you do. This is a major example of how differences have caused oppression and also shows why they shouldn’t. All people deserve to be equal; rich or poor, big or small, no matter what race. We all live on this Earth and if we want to survive, if we want to stop climate change or any of the world's problems and make the world a better place, we have to realize that all humans are equal and deserve to be treated the same way, no matter what they look like, how they act, what language they speak, where they are from, or who they are. We need to stand up for equal rights!
