I have designed a Scratch presentation which incorporates animations. The centre of my creation is Survival; the thematic aspect of a sea voyage. Pirates, humid weather, stormy seas, starvation were issues Anh Do face in the memoir, “The Happiest Refugee”. The task was to design a backpack that would make the issues stated earlier, easier to handle. My presentation is a visual design made digital. It is an interactive animation on Scratch. The project includes items within a backpack such as food cooking utensils, weaponry, tools, sanitary supplies, clothing and sleeping bags. All of these objects are essential in the voyage. The beginning of the memoir focuses on the time of the Vietnam war. This family is escaping war like many other Vietnamese families. In this situation, they are getting away in a fishing boat with no idea of the destination. They need a sufficient supply of food, clothing for the journey which could be for an indefinite period. In my scratch project, I have added food items. Food is essential and is vital to survival. The food which I have included are white rice, pasta, canned food, gallons of water, tea, coffee, and baby food. I included white rice and pasta because it lasts longer and will be essential in the journey. Rice is also a traditional food in Vietnam and will be easy to obtain. Canned food, just like rice and pasta, lasts long. Canned food like meat, vegetables and tuna lasts up to two to five years which is more than enough for Anh's journey. Thirty mini canned food could fit in Anh's family's suitcase. Water is a requirement. 15 gallons of water would be enough to survive for two months in the sea. I chose to include tea and coffee as well. The tea and coffee will support Anh's father throughout the sleepless nights. To eat and cook the food, they would need cooking utensils, paper plates and cutlery. My creative piece also includes non-food items such as weapons, a toolbox, sanitary supplies, clothing and sleeping bags. The weapons are knives, guns, multi-purpose pocket knives. These weapons will be good at defending the poor families in case pirates strike them. Anh's Father will also need tools such as hammers, a lighter, ropes, a wrench or a screwdriver in case something in the boat requires mending. A bucket would also be beneficial in case the little boat starts flooding or if the food needs to be cooked (the lighter can produce the fire). The family also needs to stay hygienic. Toothbrushes, toilet papers and soap will be necessities. Clothing is also essential. To make the humid weather more bearable, light clothing would be the best choice. To make the nights pleasant, the family needs sleeping bags.
