{Prologue} Fathom hurried down a dark, forgotten hall of the Summer Palace. His glowing scales cast eerie, dancing shadows on the stone walls. Turning down a side corridor, he stopped, a necklace clutched in his talons. Glittering, ice-blue eyes peered at him from out of the darkness. He gulped. This wasn’t supposed to happen. Suddenly, the eyes attacked, and in the light from his glowing scales Fathom could see a female Icewing springing at him. She feinted and stabbed, with a kind of deadly beauty. Fathom backed up, protecting the necklace. The Icewing advanced, hissing. “Give it to me.” A voice surprisingly soft for such an aggressive dragon rang out in the dark passage. “N-no.” Fathom’s voice shook. “You must.” The Icewing attacked again. This time Fathom couldn’t do anything. The necklace was ripped from his talons. The Icewing disappeared down the passage, and Fathom knew he would never see her or the necklace again. He sighed. The necklace could have done so much, saved so many lives. Now it was gone forever. Finally realizing what could happen, he sank to the floor. Who knew what the IceWings would do to the necklace? If he was being generous, he could say that they would destroy it once they found out its true powers, but if he was honest with himself, he knew they would most likely give it to Queen Borealis. IceWings were ambitious and fiercely loyal to their queen, and having an animus for a queen would finally cement them as the most powerful tribe in Pyrrhia. What he did not know was the intentions of that particular IceWing. Adélie was her name, and contrary to what Fathom had thought, she was not about to bring that necklace to the queen. The thought had crossed her mind as she exited the Summer Palace and took flight, but she quickly shook it off. What would Queen Borealis think when she turned up at the door, after all these years? No, she had different plans for the necklace. She flew across the land, and without thinking her wings guided her to the Ice Palace. Seeing a small, isolated glacier ahead, she decided to hide the necklace there. She landed with a soft spray of snow. Finding an ice cave, Adélie began to dig. After several minutes, she had dug a hole deep enough for her to put her whole leg in. She deposited the necklace in the hole, swept a pile of snow on top of it, and flew away again, hoping that would be the end of it. Little did she know that the necklace’s story was far from over. She was not alive to see the changing tides push that glacier closer and closer to shore. She was not alive to see it finally touch the mainland. She was not alive to see a lone, young IceWing wander into the cave, crying, and find the odd patch of snow. She was not alive to see that young IceWing dig until she found the necklace and put it on. She never knew that her actions on that fateful day would have such far-reaching repercussions.
