“Hey Sky-” Liam’s calm voice rasped, its weakly gentle tone making Skilar look up from his paper, one he’d been drawing on for several minutes. “Yes?” Skilar’s eyes lit up with hopefulness. “Do you want to go for a walk through the park or s-” he didn’t even get to finish before Skilar leapt out of his chair and rushed over. “We get to go outside? Really?!” He beamed as Liam nodded, his tired eyes focused on his little brother’s much brighter ones. “Come on, then. Get your shoes on and let’s go.” Feeling a smile tug at his own lips, Liam let it come. There was no reason to stop it. Anyways, why try when there was an overexcited kid bounding towards you, ready to go see the world once again...one of the few times he could...without too much fear. Liam wouldn’t even consider taking his brother farther than the property line if nothing was anywhere near lined up the way it needed to be. But for now, all he had to worry about was whether the sun’d stay out the entire day-which it likely wouldn’t, yet even then there wouldn’t be too much of a problem. Taking Skilar’s hand, Liam led him down the sidewalk to the park. It wasn’t much of a long journey, and it was made to feel even shorter as he listened to his little brother going on and on about...well...just about anything that came into his mind. Sitting on a bench to read, Liam, who’d expected Skilar to run off-yet remain completely in view-to play, he felt someone sitting as close as they could, looking over at the book. Skilar. Chuckling fondly, Liam wrapped an arm around his little brother, looking over again only a few minutes later to see that he was asleep. Not wanting to take him home so early, Liam simply continued reading, at least until Skilar awoke and was ready to leave. “Wanna know something, Liam?” Skilar asked softly just as Liam was closing-and locking-the door to the house. “What?” Liam’s voice was quiet and unsure, reflecting the nervousness in Skilar’s voice. “You may not be my dad, but you’re really close. You’re a great brother.” …
