I didn’t want to do this, but maybe it could be cool. Not many people I know have crossed the Delaware River with George Wahington. Maybe I could give it a try. That night, I snuck out of my tent and walked to the tree where I had met Rosanna before. There was no one there. I waited for what seemed like hours but was probably minutes until I saw her. She was carrying a bag of clothing and food. “I found boats we could hide on,” I told her,”They’re just for weapons and supplies.” She nodded and handed me some clothes,”Great. Wear these tomorrow night. Here’s the plan: we’ll sneak over here and get on the boats directly after dinner tomorrow-That’s when they’re leaving.” “Where are you going after we cross?” I asked. “I’m not sure,” she replied. Rosanna opened her mouth like she was going to say something, then shut it. We walked back to the camp together in silence. I couldn’t believe it was Christmass! It felt strange because it had been September at home. Everyone exchanged presents, and there was a big dinner. I didn’t pay attention to most of it because I was so nervous for the crossing. Finally, dinner was over. I headed back to my tent. There, I changed into my pants and shirt. When I was ready, I left to meet Rosanna. Rosanna was leaning against the tree, staring into space. She turned and waved when she spotted me, and motioned to start walking toward the boats. It had begun to snow, and I shivered as I hurried toward her. The artillery boats were long, flat, and wooden. Men were loading boxes and cannons onto some of them, but two were already full. Rosanna motioned to go to the last one, and I followed her.. To board the boat, we would have to cross a narrow board being used as a bridge. It looked a little scary, but I usually had good balance. Soon I was on the boat. Rosanna, however, stood frozen on the shore. “Rosanna!” I whispered,” Come on!” She stayed frozen but she whispered back,” I can’t. I can’t swim” “You don’t have to,” I told her,” Just walk slowly across the board. Even if you could fall in, you could probably stand.” I slowly urged her across. Soon she was standing next to me. “You did it!” I exclaimed. Rosana smiled,” Yes! Come, we need to hide.” We hid inside a cave made of boxes, whispering to each other until someone else boarded the boat. Minutes later, we started moving. It was so serene out here. If I tilted my head at the right angle, I could see the stars. Rosanna pushed one of the boxes away, pointed, and softly said,” It’s Geroge Washington!” She was right. It reminded me of that painting I had seen, except everyone was sitting down. I wondered what the painter based the painting off of. We sat there in silence for another minute, just watching, until we got to shore. Quickly, we crossed off the boat. Just like that, it was over. As we were standing there, one of my earrings fell out of my ear. I gasped. “Rosanna,” I told her,” I think I have to go now.” She looked at me,” I know.” My other earring fell out, and soon I was spinning again, spinning away. I opened my eyes. I was in my bedroom, wearing jeans and a t-shirt. I checked my watch. It was still 5:04 PM. Nothing had changed, and yet everything had.
That was long. Thanks for reading!
