Your father only saved you but you got sick. Your mother sewed your brother‘s soul into yours. It made you survive but your dead brother started interfering with your speech and reading abilities. Every one in the village started to call you the wrong boy and were mean to you. Years later, your mother saves the queen with her magic. Then she leaves to help the queen at her castle. After your mom leaves, bandits come to your house in search of the magic. You take the magic and then they threaten your father. You come out of the house with the magic in you. You don’t like to hurt people so you go with them. They knock you out and put you in a sack. You use the magic to escape by turning a guy into stone and falling off a bridge. You get up and run into the woods with a bandit after you.
#1 READ THIS Problems in the story: Ned's problems are that the bandits are trying to take Ned's magic. He needs to stop King Ott and not give a way for the magic to control him. Text evidence: -On page 185 King Ott thinks, "King Ott knew that he would not rest until the magic, and the country, were in his grasp." -On page 276 Ned and the magic had an argument saying, "BE SILENT", Ned willed. "We won't". "STOP MOVING. YOU WILL BE STILL". "We don't want to, please". "I AM THE KEEPER OF THIS MAGIC. AND YOU WILL DO AS I SAY." -On page 316 Ned says, "You know it isn't fair for the king to be denied the pleasure of a ride in a stone giants fist. Perhaps we should indulge him". I think that that is a way of saying, "Let's capture King Ott" because he wanted to stop King Ott. Aine's problems are trying to get her father to leave banditry and the pendant. As well as to get Ned to his village safely so Aine can live with her father. Text evidence: -On page 81 Aine really wants her father to change and thinks, "Well, maybe she could convince him to leave, leave the wood, leave banditry, leave the pendant, leave it all." Themes: You should always trust people if you really need them. Text evidence: -On page 210 Ned is in a scree slide and he trusts Aine to get him out. He does this even though he barely knows Aine because he trusts her to get him out. : Characters -Aine's Traits: -Cares about her father -Does important stuff around the house -Wants to go to the sea Text evidence: -On page 81 Aine really cares about her father and thinks, "Well, maybe she could convince him to leave, leave the wood, leave banditry, leave the pendant, leave it all." If that happens she thought they would be together. -On page 81 Aine thinks that, "Crying certainly wouldn't get her work done." -On page 81 Aine thinks, "She would never see the sea, that much was clear." She said that in a way that sounded like she wanted to go but she thought she couldn’t. -Ned's Traits: -Stutters -Wants to go to the sea -Doesn't want to hurt people Text evidence: -On page 35 Ned stutters, “S-st--” when he was trying to say stop, but stuttered instead. This is important because he got his stutters from his dead brother who is inside of him. This interferes with his speech and reading abilities. -On page 2 Ned and Tam think, “Hoping to make it to the sea” because they really want to go to the sea. -On page 115 Ned thinks, “No!” He thinks that because he didn't want Bert the robber to turn to stone, because he doesn’t like to hurt people. : Power holders Power holders in the story are the bandit king, the magic, and the stones. Text evidence: -On page 231 the Stones say, “the roads must be diverted-It must be bent”. The stones are talking about bending Ned and Aine's route. -On page 342 the bandits think, “Their leader was dead. Their time is now.” That is how big an affect the Bandit King made over the bandits. -On page 221 the magic took advantage of Ned's thoughts when the text said, "He tried to imagine himself heated all the way through. ‘All right then’, the magic said." And that made a fire to draw the bandits. Dragons in the story Dragons in Witches Boy are... -The king trying to get Ned's magic. -The magic trying to make Ned do things he doesn't want to do. -A symbolic dragon is people wanting to get more power like the Bandit King and King Ott. Text evidence: -On page 221 the magic says, "If you used us, we wouldn't hurt you so much." I think that that was an attempt to force Ned to use the magic more and let the magic have more freedom. -On page 185 King Ott thinks, “King Ott knew that he would not rest until the magic, and the country, were in his grasp." This shows that he wants to be even more powerful and he is a king already. This is an example of his greed for power. Pg 65 In the text, the Bandit King says to his fellow bandits, "Our dear King Ott" then, "Will pay to get his hands on her magic". This shows that he is greedy to get his hands on the money. If you are reading this it PROBABLY means that you read the whole thing. Bravo! If not, YOU ARE LAZY! READ IT! IT IS VERY INTERESTING!
