It was the middle of 1976, and two well-known scientists sat together, thinking. They needed to do this. They needed to do this. They had families, mouths to feed. It all depended on this. Harvey Everett, the first scientist, had had an idea: if he created in some way a means of teleportation, quicker than what people already had, he would be richer than rich, selling these to companies all over the world. But that wasn't all. Right now, he struggled to make money, and his wife had lost her job. Add that to three kids, and they were out of money. This, though-this could change all of it. He just needed to- And it opened up. An abandoned prototype of a portal-like device came to life, showing a murky purple and blue space inside. As Harvey got closer, though, he realized that this may be the answer. He had set up another one of these portals outside of the room earlier, and without thinking twice, he jumped in. Meanwhile, Mia Logan, the second scientist, worked on creating something entirely different. She was trying to make a new power source by extracting energy from various items. So far, this project had failed miserably, but Mia felt the need to keep going. Right now, she was focused on creating a new device to capture the energy, as her old one seemed faulty. She had had a family too, but they were lost when a plane crashed because of lack of fuel. this was why she had started the project. She needed to make sure that no one would ever have to go through the pain and grieving that she did ever again. She had to- Something flew through the portal, too quick to recognize. Mia had not noticed the portal before. She had no idea that Harvey, her only friend, was inside. She was focused on her project. She looked back and gasped. The level of energy on that thing was off the charts! This could be the answer! She carefully set up a trap by connecting the photoelectric nanotube to the... never mind. When another thing flew through, she was able to capture it. It was...a person? It was about the size of her forearm, and it had wings. Mia, blinded by curiosity, started running tests on it. As more "people" came in, she caught them. For a second, though, she couldn't help but stop tuning out the noise. Their complaints. Their shrieks. Their screams, even. But she couldn't let it get to her head. She could not let other people's pain stop her from avenging their death. she took in a deep breath and kept going. after a while, she had managed to extract as much energy as she could without hurting the organisms. She took it, and using a lot of fancy chemistry, was able to create a dark yellow liquid, almost the consistency of water. She put it into a syringe, careful not to spill any. She did not want to hurt anything living before she knew of any side effects, so she found a beautiful purple flower outside and injected the serum into it. Nothing happened. Mia sighed and went back to work.
