When the green bear catches the ball, he uses photosynthesis to convert the carbon dioxide into oxygen. He doesn't need oxygen, so he throws the ball to the blue bear, who does need it. The blue bear uses cellular respiration to convert the oxygen into carbon dioxide. He doesn't need carbon dioxide, so he throws the ball back to the green bear.
