Flame and Sea I turned to face Cerulean as she looked around, eyes wide, salty water streaming down her body and clothes toward the sandy beach. Salty water that was a mix of ocean water and tears. I took her hand in mine, and she smiled up at me, a faint smile created to hide the waves of despair crashing inside of her. I gestured out toward the sea, where large boats rocked on the dark water. “Cerulean. We’ve got to burn the ships. It’s the only way,” Cerulean blinked at me, mouth slightly open. “B-But…” she began with a stutter. I cut her off, smiling gently. “It’ll be okay.” Cerulean hesitated, then nodded, a small frown set on her lips as she pushed off the dusty ground. I helped her stand, and took the water-proof capsule my father gave me out of my jacket pocket. I dumped its contents into my hand, and put all of the assorted objects back - except the matches. I lit one, and held the flame out to Cerulean. She smiled at me determinedly, and I threw the match out with all of my might toward the closest ship. As soon as the fire caught, I took both of Cerulean’s hands in mine. “This is it. Are you ready?” Cerulean looked down, and her eyes were hidden in the shadow of her bangs. She finally looked back up at me with a smile. “Yes.” I let out a breath I didn’t know I had been holding, and grinned at her. “Then let’s go.” I led her toward the light, the rising sun which would lead us home eventually. I felt the heat of the fire on my back quickly fading as the boats succumbed to the cold waters and the flames licking toward the sky were extinguished. I picked Cerulean up and twirled her around above my head as she laughed. Things would be okay. We wouldn’t dwell on the past - only look back on it for guidance. The future was bright, and I was ready for anything, as long as Cerulean was by my side. Things would be okay.
