They used magnetic tapes in order to store sound. Tapes had horrible sound quality, with audible crackle, and the pitch of the tape could change drastically and unexpectedly every time they were used. Weirdly, these exact qualities gave tape players a second life in the modern era, with musicians like amulets using tapes in creative ways, music companies like Make Noise, Qubit Electronix and Landscape creating new ways to experience and work with tape cassettes and tape emulations, and there are even entire genres, like lo-fi hiphop, which are based on the imperfections of tape players. Here, you can experience tapes without going away from your screen.
