- Flag Facts : Episode One - (Any Homophobic comments will be deleted. Please keep those opinions to yourself, thank you!) Welcome to Flag Facts, my new series where I look at a LGBTQ+ Pride flag and talk about it's meaning and history. In this episode, I cover the Gay Pride flag sometimes also called the Rainbow Flag. - Who is the Flag for? - In this section, I cover which group of people this flag was made for and what it means to be a member of that group. The Gay Pride flag, while it can be used to represent anyone who is LGBTQ+, is most often associated with homosexual men. Homosexuality means to be attracted to those who are the same gender as you. So this flag is most often used to support men who are attracted to other men. - History - In this section I cover the flag's history and how it has changed. The Gay pride flag was originally designed by Gilbert Baker in 1978 as an alternative to the gay symbol at the time, the pink triangle, which many did not want as a symbol due to it's origins. The original design had eight stripes, unlike the modern versions six in the order of hot pink, red, orange, yellow, green, turquoise, indigo and purple. The Hot pink was removed in 1979 and later the turquoise and indigo were replaced with royal blue. After the assassination of Harvey Milk, demand for the rainbow flag increased dramatically. In 1989, the flag became even more well known after John Stout filed a sue against his landlords who attempted to stop him from displaying the flag. 2003 was the 25th anniversary of the gay pride flag. An emoji version of the flag was approved in July 2016. - Meaning - In this section I explain the symbolic meaning of the individual parts of the flag. The Red stripe represents Life. The Orange stripe represents Healing. The Yellow stripe represents Sunlight. The Green stripe represents Nature. The Blue stripe represents Serenity. The Purple stripe represents Spirit. - Conclusion - Spot a typo or mistake? Let me know in the comments! Got any questions or suggestions for the next episode, also to the comments with you.
