you set the position of the rotors and if you want somebody else to decode your message then write down the starting positions of the rotors. then you can change around the plugboard, write down what you changed, and type out your "secret message" key by key, making sure to write down the encoded output as you type each key. keep in mind you cannot type spaces this is an intended feature as the enigma machines in ww2 which is what this is based off couldn't type spaces.
