you set the position of the rotors and if you want somebody else to decode your message then write down the starting positions of the rotors. then you can change around the plugboard write down what you changed as well then type out your "secret message" key by key making sure to write down the final encoded message. Keep in mind you can type spaces and numbers because this is better.
