Okay, so I don’t normally post things like this, but this issue has been bothering me for a while and I need to get it out. Why do people glorify having depression and anxiety? It’s dumb. Stop. A. Just because a person doesn’t have a diagnosed mental health problem doesn’t mean that they don’t have a mental health problem at all. The mental health industry has several flaws, like for many people, if you can’t get a diagnosis you can’t see a professional. There are other problems besides the problems we see. B. Where does it get you to brag about being unhappy? Nowhere. There’s a difference between talking to people about it, and straight up dismissing them for not having a mental health condition. I’ve had people straight up say to my face: “You aren’t homeless, you don’t have cancer, and you don’t have depression, so you can just shut up!” Or “Were you /diagnosed/ with anxiety? ... yeah, that’s what I thought, I bet you’re lucky, I bet your life is EASY.” Or “Nobody cares about your little problems!” I understand that these can be manifestations of them trying to cope with their feelings, but to me it’s incredibly hard not to just see them being snobby, and it’s not okay to assume that just because people don't have the same problems as you that means they don’t have problems. And C. I, and I’m sure many other people as well, find it incredibly irritating when people glorify having depression or anxiety, it does not make you a better person nor a worse one, if you are having mental health problems then go see a professional, being rude to your friends won’t help anything or anyone. If a professional won’t or can’t see you then I recommend talking to your family/friends about it as long as you’re not being rude, if they tell you things like “get over yourself” or “nobody cares” then I really recommend getting a new hobby or doing lots of things that make you happy, after that I can’t really give any advice, sorry.
Moral of the story: Stop glorifying mental health problems.
