Chapter 5: New enemy “What do you mean?” Sonic asked angrily “Of course we won!” Shadow got into position to attack “Who are you anyway?” In the sky was a black hedgehog with pale blue chest fur, hands, muzzle, and some blue on his spines. He wore black weight lifting gloves, and had yellow eyes with red where his whites should be. “I am powerful, I am your shadow, I am your demise” he raised his right hand into the air then dramatically clutched his chest and bowed “But you may call me Mephiles.” “He looks so much like, Shadow” Espio commented with a puzzled look on his face. The charcoal black hedgehog growled in response “He does”. Channa formed a teal sword out of thin air “What do you want from us?” she asked. Mephiles sighed “My wants are none of your concern.” The rain started to pick up, and was pouring relentlessly. The clouds grew a darker shade of grey and thunder could be heard. “I think it’s best we take shelter” Silver warned as he snuggled deeper into his coat. Espio pointed to the home Glacier had been living in “Silver’s right! There’s no way we could fight out in this weather!”. If Mephiles had a mouth, he would’ve been grinning at that moment, he raised his hand into the air, and formed a green spear “Oh? We can’t fight like this?” he took aim “CHAAAAOOOSSSS SPEEEAAARRR!!!” he exclaimed as he threw his weapon toward Channa. “Watch out!” Sonic yelled as he dashed toward her. Silver stood where he was, his feet glued to the ground of fear. There was a huge explosion of green and Channa was knocked down. Silver ran over to his cousin and shook her shoulder gently “A-Are you alright!? C’mon! Please say something to me!” Shadow formed a spear of his own, but Mephiles was gone. Espio carried Channa back to her house on his back, while the others followed. “Do you think she’ll be okay?” Sonic asked, with worry in his tone. “I’m not sure” Shadow said, casting a glance toward Silver, who wore a horrified expression on his face. When they had reached Channa’s room, Espio gently set her down “Go get, Blaze” he said to Sonic. The blue hedgehog was off as soon as he was given the command. Shadow wanted to make sure Channa was alright, but Espio told him to give Silver some time first. The grey hedgehog stared at his injured cousin; his vision was blurry due to the tears filling his eyes. He balled his fists and slammed them down on his lap as a tear ran down his cheek “I’m sorry! I... I couldn’t protect you!” he exclaimed “Why... did he have to hurt you? I should’ve done something! But I... I just stood still. While he did this to you.” Shadow was listening from the other side of the door. Espio sighed and rolled his eyes “What are you doing, Shadow?” he asked. “I’m listening to Silver” was his simple reply. “And?” Shadow folded his arms across his chest “He’s beating himself up over this. He thinks it’s his fault Channa’s hurt”. Espio put his ear to the door and could hear the hedgehog’s partly muffled cries “I see...” Shadow made his way down the steps to the fireplace “Let’s hope Sonic can get here with Blaze fast”. Mephiles searched the battle site. Some of the homes had been destroyed from his chaos spear, and a patch of grass where the explosion took place was black. He heard sounds coming from behind a rock and walked toward them “I know somebody’s here” he said. Glacier slowly left her hiding spot and put her hands on her hips “Alright, you found me”. Mephiles stared blankly at her, he was expecting one of the hedgehogs “Who are you?” The turquoise cat frowned “Glacier. Glacier the cat”. Mephiles started out in the other direction he seemed unimpressed. “Wait!” Glacier called out to him, as he stopped in his tracks glancing at her over his shoulder, “Could I come with you? I-I'll be useful!” Mephiles scratched his chin, as if in deep thought “Very well” he answered and motioned for her to follow him. Blaze and Sonic rushed through the door and up the staircase, Espio and Shadow jumped from their seats and followed. Silver, who was crying at Channa's bedside, was surprised when Blaze entered the room. "Sonic!" she called to him "get me a bucket of warm water and rag". Removing some bandages and other supplies from her first aid kit, she glanced over the wounded hedgehog's injuries. When Sonic returned with the items, Blaze started to clean the wounds. "I-Is she... going to be okay?" Silver asked in between sniffles. The cat put her hand on his shoulder "Of course, I'll make sure of it" she said reassuringly, then returned to her task. Shadow stared blankly at Channa, she looked pale. Her breathing was slow and labored. 'Mephiles... his powers are like mine' Shadow thought to himself 'I won't let him get away with this.' "There!" Blaze said as she finished with the last bandage "Now Silver, let's get you some tea. You look exhausted. Can you help me out, Espio?" The purple chameleon left the room, leaving Shadow and Sonic with injured Channa. "So..." Sonic started-
